The tendered design was for a precast, match cast, segmental balanced cantilever, flanged box girder segment superstructure. The owner, The City of Richmond, wanted an elegant bridge from the underside as pedestrians and joggers use the dyke below. The bridge is also an entrance to the city from Vancouver Airport.
The average weight of the segments was 75 tonnes. A crane mounted on a barge installed 4 pieces per day using the balanced cantilever technique. The typical span length was 60m. The project was completed in one year, two months ahead of schedule. The superstructure is transversely post-tensioned in addition to the longitudinal post-tensioning.
This project successfully constructed, was the first bridge of its kind built in BC. The total length of the bridge was 566m, and was recognized with a PCI award.
